Retirement card messages from colleagues
A retirement card can hold both gratitude for the work someone has done and excitement for the freedom ahead. Pick the tone that fits your relationship, then add one thing that is unmistakably theirs.

Warm and simple wishes
- “Congratulations on your retirement. You have given so much to this team, and I hope the next chapter gives plenty back to you.”
- “Thank you for all the work, care and humour you brought here. Wishing you unhurried mornings and wonderful adventures.”
- “It has been such a pleasure working with you. May retirement be full of the people and things you love most.”
- “You have earned every slow coffee and spontaneous afternoon. Happy retirement!”
For a mentor or manager
- “Thank you for making room for questions and for showing us what thoughtful leadership looks like. We will carry that with us.”
- “Your calm advice has helped me through more than one difficult day. I hope retirement is as generous to you as you have been to us.”
- “You built a team where people could do good work and feel at home. That is a remarkable legacy.”
- “I have learned so much from watching how you listen, decide and support people. Thank you, and enjoy every minute of what comes next.”
For a close work friend
- “The office will be quieter without your stories and much less fun without our lunch breaks. I will miss you, but I am so excited for you.”
- “From early starts to the last-minute wins, I am glad we got to share it all. Do not become a stranger just because your calendar is finally free.”
- “You have been my favourite part of an ordinary Tuesday for years. Here is to many brilliant, extraordinary Tuesdays ahead.”
- “Retirement means you can finally ignore the meeting invites. I still expect an occasional coffee with you, though.”
From the whole team
- “Your kindness and experience have shaped this team. Thank you for everything you have taught us and every time you stepped in to help. With our warmest wishes, from all of us.”
- “We are celebrating your years of hard work, your good humour and the difference you made to so many colleagues. Enjoy this new chapter. You will be missed.”
Make one message your own
Mention a project, a shared ritual or a lesson you will keep using. If you do not know their retirement plans, avoid assuming they will travel or take up a hobby. A sincere wish for time on their own terms is enough.
When many colleagues want to contribute, give each person space for their own message. The recipient will remember the particular voices as much as the final group sign-off.
